The Second Session of the Sixty-third General Assembly resumed on November 12, 2008, at 2 p.m. The Second Session of the Sixty-third General Assembly adjourned to the call of the Speaker on Wednesday, December 3, 2008. The Standing Committee on Social Development’s review of Safe Use of Cell Phones

The Standing Committee on Social Development of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island has been given the mandate to seek public input and undertake analysis on the potential need for new legislation that would prohibit drivers from using handheld telephones while operating a motor vehicle. The Committee invites those interested in participating in this review to contact them by Friday, October 3, 2008. Additional information can be found at www.assembly.pe.ca/consult/cell_phones.

The Standing Committee on Social Development’s review of proposed amendments to the Smoke-Free Places Act

At the request of the Department of Health, the Standing Committee on Social Development of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island will conduct public hearings to collect feedback from Islanders on proposed amendments to the Smoke-Free Places Act. The Committee invites those interested in participating in this review to contact them by Friday, October 3, 2008. Additional information can be found at www.assembly.pe.ca/consult/smoke_free.

Health and Safety: Bill 36, An Act to Amend the Workers Compensation Act

Bill 36 provides adjustments and review of benefits and wage loss benefits for workers. First reading April 19, 2006. Link to Bill 36. The Bill received Royal Assent on May 24, 2006 and is awaiting a date to come into force. As of October 2006 proclamation was still pending.

Bill 61, An Act to Amend the Designation of Beneficiaries Under Benefit Plans Act

The Bill adds tax-free savings accounts to those plans that are included in the definition of “plan” under the Act. The section also is amended to anticipate the addition of prescribed plans to the definition by the regulations. Link to Bill 61. First reading November 26, 2008. Second reading on November 27 and sent to committee. Received third reading and Royal Assent on December 3, 2008. Proclamation is not required. The Bill is now law.

Bill 60, An Act to Amend the Employment Standards Act

The amendment contained in this bill will ensure that the paid holiday provisions of the Act apply to employees whose terms and conditions of work are established by collective agreements. Link to Bill 60. First reading November 26, 2008. Second reading on November 27 and sent to committee. Received third reading and Royal Assent on December 3, 2008. Proclamation is not required. The Bill is now law.

Bill No. 44, Islander Day Act

This bill creates a holiday in February throughout the Province known as Islander Day. Link to Bill 44. First reading November 27, 2008. Second reading on November 28 and sent to committee. Received third reading and Royal Assent on December 3, 2008. Proclamation is not required. The Bill is now law.

Bill No. 25, An Act to Amend the Labour Act

This Act amends the Labour Act to preclude persons who are employed as security police from striking and to establish their right to binding arbitration. Link to Bill 25. First reading November 27, 2008. Second reading on November 27 and sent to committee. Received third reading and Royal Assent on December 3, 2008. Proclamation is not required. The Bill is now law.
